I have received a response directly from ASF, so I think I am now getting closer to an answer with this issue.

I'm having issues accessing ASF DAAC data from hosts within AWS. It appears that outside AWS HTTP requests to download data eventually redirect to an AWS Cloudfront CDN endpoint in front of an S3 bucket, and that succeeds.
