I think a small sample directory with just a few files would be very helpful. I'm thinking that anything I can do to smooth the transition at my (consumer) end will make life easier.

Hmmmm. Is there any chance a test THREDDS catalog could be set up before the transition? It wouldn't need to host much data - just enough to allow piloting the new paradigm.
