Sorry we missed your reply. If the image is blank that means AOD was not observed for that location at that time because "MODIS Aerosol products monitor the ambient aerosol loading and some properties of the aerosol over cloud-free snow/ice-free land and ocean surfaces."

You must be looking at N09_AVH13C1 --NOAA-09 AVHRR NDVI product. Yes, that is only available for 1985 to 1988 period. However, the Long-term Data Record (LTDR) consists of products from AVHRR instruments on board various NOAA satellites which range from N07 (for NOAA-07 that was launched June 1981) ...

We just checked and all geoMeta files (MODIS and VIIRS) exist and looks normal. Do you have specific example that you want us to investigate?
