We discourage downloading large datasets such as TMPA in ASCII format. The download will likely be much slower and may take much more network bandwidth, and storage, especially for large subset regions. The projection used is, geographically, the Equirectangular projection, and the datum is WGS84.
When import the data into GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, Erdas/Imagine, ENVI), select the global WGS84 "Geograhic" coordinate system as spatial reference/projection info.
