definitions of SST from MODIS and VIIRS

by sarahcd » Tue Feb 13, 2018 11:15 am America/New_York

I'm trying to get clear definitions of the L3 mapped SST products provided by MODIS and VIIRS. Can anyone verify the tentative ones below?

MODIS
NSST_sst: Nighttime SST computed from MODIS bands 31 (10.780–11.280 um) and 32 (11.770–12.270 um)
SST4_sst4: Nighttime SST computed from MODIS bands 22 (3.929–3.989 um) and 23 (4.020–4.080 um)
SST_sst: Daytime SST computed from MODIS bands 31 (10.780–11.280 um) and 32 (11.770–12.270 um)

VIIRS
SNPP_NSST_sst: ? Nighttime SST computed from VIIRS bands M15 (10.26–11.26 um) and M16 (11.54–12.49 um)?
SNPP_SST3_sst_triple: ? Nighttime SST computed from VIIRS bands M15 (10.26–11.26 um), M16 (11.54–12.49 um), and M12 (3.61–3.79 um)?
SNPP_SST_sst: ? Daytime SST computed from VIIRS bands M15 (10.26–11.26 um) and M16 (11.54–12.49 um)?

Huge thanks for any confirmation/correction! Not sure if it's just me but this basic info has been difficult to pull, e.g. because references to VIIRS are apparently missing from the data format specs (https://oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/format/#3M) and largely missing from the Ocean Level-3 Binned Data Products document (e.g. not in Table 2), and several "MODIS only" notes I think need to be updated to "VIIRS and MODIS only" at https://oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov/atbd. For anyone else looking, the clearest descriptions I have found are in Tu et al. (2015) (http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/rs71215881) and a VIIRS SST ATBD at www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/jpss/documents/ATBD/D0001-M01-S01-010_JPSS_ATBD_VIIRS-SST_A.pdf.

Yes, your description of the bands used for the various SST products is correct.
Agreed, the pages that say MODIS-only should be updated to reflect that VIIRS also produces SST.  An oversight we will fix shortly.
The NESDIS ATBD document you refer to for VIIRS SST is, for the most part, applicable to the VIIRS triple window SST product.
It is not exactly what we've implemented, but not far off - with differences likely to be in the quality screening NOT the computation.
For the rest, the SST ATBD we've published (which, yes, says MODIS-only) is valid for VIIRS as well.

Regards,
Sean
