A few more changes at the OBPG/OB.DAAC

by OB.DAAC - SeanBailey » Tue Nov 19, 2019 2:10 pm America/New_York

To our OceanColor community,
As previously mentioned, the Ocean Biology Processing Group (OBPG) and
the Ocean Biology Distributed Active Archive Center (OB.DAAC) would
like to inform you of two changes coming for the new year.
These include:

    1) Data subscription reconfirmation
    2) EarthData Login requirement for data downloads

1) Data subscription reconfirmation

In order to ensure that resources dedicated to maintaining subscriptions are
not wasted on subscriptions that are no longer required, we will be
implementing a reconfirmation process for data subscriptions. All existing
subscriptions will be required to be reconfirmed on or before 1 January 2020.
A notification will be sent to the email address associated with the
subscription two weeks prior to the reconfirmation deadline, with an
additional notification sent one week and again one day from the deadline.
All users will need to do is to follow the instructions in the email to
reconfirm the subscription.  This action will extend the subscription for 6
months (or until the existing subscription end date, if one exists and is
prior to the new reconfirmation date).  Subscriptions made after 1 November
2019 will have a reconfirmation date set to 6 months from the date of
creation.  A reconfirmation will be required every 6 months.  If unconfirmed,
the processing of the subscription will halt.

2) EarthData Login requirement for data downloads

All OB.DAAC data will remain free and open to the public, however we will be
requiring registration for data downloads.

There are currently four data collections archived at the OB.DAAC that require
registration with the Earth Observing System Data and Information System
(EOSDIS) via the EarthData Login in order to download:

ENVISAT/MERIS Level-1
Sentinel3/OLCI Level-1
HICO
GOCI

Starting on 01 January 2020, ALL data distributed by the OB.DAAC will require
users to enter their EarthData Login credentials.

For interactive downloads (i.e. through a web browser), if not already logged
in, you will be redirected to the EarthData Login page for an initial download
request.  Subsequent downloads during the same session will not be prompted.

For non-interactive downloads, we have examples for how to provide the
necessary login credentials:

For information on registering, see:
    https://oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov/registration/

Regards,
Sean
