MODIS RF stopped since 2020-08-01?

by dem1 » Mon Dec 14, 2020 3:04 am America/New_York

Hi,

We see no new MODIS (Aqua and Terra) RF products since 2020-08-01 (134 days), do you know when new data will be available?

Thanks in advance,
Julien

There was a delay in creating the refined calibration LUTs. We expect to have an update early this week which will allow us to release the next batch of files.

Hi,

It seems there are new MODIS products distributed for august (our automatic downloading chain just get them) but they are still in QL refined mode, is it normal?

Thanks in advance,
Julien

Yes we are filling in recovered data from the instrument outage in late August, early September 2020. We do not yet have a refined calibration past July 31, so the files are being produced using refined ancillary data but the existing July calibration LUTs.

Dear Tommy,
I know that recent data (December 2020) will be refined in a few months, but we are observing a “catastrophic” decrease of all reflectances
(increasing during the last 3 months). Typically, RRS412 has decreased of at least 20% in December 2020 (relative comparison to a climatology or OLCI).
Do you have more information about that?
Thank You in advance.

MODIS RF stopped since 2020-08-01?

Philippe,

We are aware of the issue.  A few years ago we implemented a forward-stream reprocessing scheme for the "refined" data in which we were updating the calibration on an approximate monthly basis.  That process hit a snag when the person primarily responsible for generating the calibration took an unexpected leave of absence, so we had another staff member take over the task.  Unfortunately, there was a misconfiguration that was not identified until after the primary went on leave.  We have only recently identified the source of the misconfiguration and are working to verify that we can replicate the last update before applying it to the intervening 8 months of data.   With luck we will be able to generate a viable calibration update and will reprocess the data from ~July 2020 onward.  Until we do, however, the data will continue to exhibit this unrealistic drop in the blue band reflectances.

Regards,
Sean
