MERIS name convention and processing

by huhuhu » Mon May 10, 2021 4:20 pm America/New_York

Dear colleague: I used to be able to search the oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov site and download and processing MERIS L1 file (using l2gen) in the following name convention:
MER_FRS_1PPEPA20040624_091920_000002282028_00036_12114_1284.N1.bz2

But now the same search resulted in the following filename:
EN1_MDSI_MER_FRS_1P_20040715T095335_20040715T100459_012415_0337_20180419T062513_0100.ZIP

Although I can still download and uncompress it, Seadas7.5.3 can't process it. Any solutions to get around? Is it related to the search engine, so the old name is still there but the search just returned the new name "EN1...."?

On a related issue, the search of MODIS/Terra files from oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov resulted in duplicated filenames. Although the redundancy can be removed offline, I think the search engine may have a bug.

Thanks! Chuanmin Hu, University of South Florida

Dear Chuanmin Hu,

The EN1 files are the new Release 4 of the MERIS L1B data that we have just ingested. I'm not sure if support for these has made it into SeaDAS yet, but you would need to unzip the file and give the xfdumanifest.xml file as the input file. Our group will be releasing more information about the new MERIS file in the coming weeks.

Regards,
john

Thanks John. My search actually returned a mixture of both old filenames (MER....) and new filenames (EN1....). Are the old files still available through the same search? Sean just let me know that SeaDAS8 is able to process the new filenames but SeaDAS8 is just a beta version. If for the same granule I can still grab the old files that would solve the problem before SeaDAS8 final version is released.

Also, I wonder if you guys have plans to "repack" the new names to the old name convention after you receive all MERIS L1 files from ESA. Thanks!

Chuanmin,

We will be removing access to the older files soon and the newer filenames will remain as they are, as those are the names ESA gave them.

As for the beta status for SeaDAS 8, that is only for the visualization component. The OCSSW component is quite mature and I would recommend you use it. We currently list SeaDAS 8 as 'beta' primarily because there are some elements/functionality that was in SeaDAS 7.5.3 that we were not able to get into 8 yet.

Sean

Chuanmin,

For the new FRS files, it also seems that ESA merged scenes from the same orbit into single files, so there isn't the 1-to-1 relationship between the old and new files.

Regarding the search issue you had with Aqua/Terra that resulted in duplicate names, can you post the search parameters you used that resulted in those results so we can check it out?
