Definition: an average level of the surface of Earth's oceans from which heights such as elevation may be measured.
Rational: Physical parameter is generated directly or indirectly from GRACE/GRACE-FO missions.

EARTH SCIENCE>SOLID EARTH>GRAVITY/GRAVITATIONAL FIELD>GRAVITY>GRAVITY ANOMALY
Definition: The difference between the measured gravity and the mean gravity over a period of time.
Rational: Physical parameter is generated directly or indirectly from GRACE/GRACE-FO missions.

EARTH SCIENCE>TERRESTRIAL HYDROSPHERE>SURFACE MASS
Definition: The summation of all mass within ~20 km of the Earth’s surface (i.e. groundwater, soil moisture, surface water, snow, atmosphere) expressed on the surface of the Earth
Rational: Physical parameter is generated directly or indirectly from GRACE/GRACE-FO missions.

EARTH SCIENCE>TERRESTRIAL HYDROSPHERE>SURFACE MASS>LIQUID WATER EQUIVALENT THICKNESS (LWET)
Definition: A unit of measurement of how thick a uniform layer of water at the surface of the Earth would need to be to account for an equivalent mass at the surface of the Earth.
Rational: Physical parameter is generated directly or indirectly from GRACE/GRACE-FO missions.

EARTH SCIENCE>TERRESTRIAL HYDROSPHERE>SURFACE MASS>MASS TRANSPORT
Definition: The change in mass from one specified period of time to another specified period of time.
Rational: Physical parameter is generated directly or indirectly from GRACE/GRACE-FO missions.

EARTH SCIENCE>TERRESTRIAL HYDROSPHERE>SURFACE MASS>MASS BALANCE
Definition: The definition of how the mass of an area changes over time; i.e. how balanced the mass is (e.g., whether processes that cause an increase mass, such as precipitation, are balanced with processes that cause mass loss, such as runoff and evaporation)

Definition: The summation of all water on the land surface and in the subsurface. It includes surface soil moisture, root zone soil moisture, groundwater, snow, ice, water stored in the vegetation, rivers and lakes.
Rational: Physical parameter is generated directly or indirectly from GRACE/GRACE-FO missions.

EARTH SCIENCE>SERVICES>MODELS>SPHERICAL HARMONIC MODEL
Definition: An orthogonal set of basis functions to define the amplitudes at the surface of a sphere. It is often employed in solving partial differential equations in many scientific fields, and can be thought of as the 2D Fourier transform of a spatial grid.
Rational: The physical model used to produce the GRACE/GRACE-FO Level 2 datasets.

EARTH SCIENCE>SERVICES>MODELS> MASS CONCENTRATION (MASCON) MODEL
Definition: A basis function to define “blocks” of mass on the surface of a sphere or an ellipsoid, for GRACE(-FO) used as an alternative to spherical harmonics.
Rational: The physical model used to produce the GRACE/GRACE-FO Level 3 Mascon datasets.
