Oil spill track via satellite systems_Suggestions

by cahitmuderris » Tue Sep 07, 2021 3:41 pm America/New_York

Hi there,

I am dealing with the tracking of a current oil spill around the maritime zone - east of Cyprus Island in the East Mediterranean Sea.

Which satellite systems can be convenient for this purpose.
Any suggestion will make me glad?

Thanks ...

Hello,

I can't speak for all of the data and imagery available from NASA, but I can point you here as a starting point for a set of examples which illustrate what an oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico looked like using the MODIS sensor aboard the Terra and Aqua satellites (as well as from other sources):
https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/image ... -of-mexico

You can then use the NASA Worldview application to look at MODIS and VIIRS Corrected Reflectance imagery to look for any spills in your area of interest:
https://worldview.earthdata.nasa.gov/

Here's a link to Worldview zoomed into the Cypress area on 2021 September 7; you can use the "eyeball" buttons for each layer under "Base Layers" to toggle the Corrected Reflectance imagery from different satellites:
https://go.nasa.gov/3EhTvBc

Please note that oil spills can be difficult to track given that the lighting conditions, clouds, etc are highly variable and there may not be much contrast between the ocean and oil slick.

Hope this helps!

Ryan
