Sensible heat flux from MERRA2

by solkim » Tue Sep 28, 2021 3:55 pm America/New_York

Hi, I could not find any resources on this so wanted to check. What is the appropriate method to obtain/calculate surface sensible heat flux from MERRA2 globally over land and water? There are several sensible heat flux variables such as HFLUX, SHLAND, HFLUXICE, HFLUXWTR, and GHTSKIN. Basically looking for the MERRA2 equivalent of the CESM variable SHFLX. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello,
Here is the reply from our MERRA-2 subject matter expert.

"We recommend HFLUX from the FLX collection. The others are components -- for example, SHLAND is land heat flux (same for ICE/WTR, regarding being a component). GHLAND is also in the LND collection, and so is Land Only, as per the definition of the collection, but should be defined as the net heating for the land surface.

The FLX collection contains data that are integrated over all surface types. Variables in other collections, LND, or OCN for example, are land only or ocean only."
