Sea Surface Temperature Products in QGIS

by g.studer.ellis » Sun Jan 23, 2022 1:26 pm America/New_York

I am having an issue utilizing Sea Surface Temperature products from the OP DAAC in QGIS on a MacBook Pro.

Problem:
Importing SOME SST .nc files causes QGIS to crash and enter “Not Responding” status, requires manual “Force Quit” return to application functionality.
Those few SST .nc files which do import do not contain a CRS and cannot be reprojected in QGIS.

Data:
GHRSST Level 4 MUR Global Foundation Sea Surface Temperature Analysis (v4.1) – “Not Responding”
GHRSST Level 2P Global Sea Surface Skin Temperature from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the NASA Aqua satellite (GDS2) – No CRS error
GHRSST Level 2P OSPO dataset v2.61 from VIIRS on the NOAA-20 satellite (GDS v2) – No CRS error

Computer/Hardware:
MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019)
Processor: 2.6 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7
Memory: 16 GB 2667 MHz DDR4
Graphics (Integrated): Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB
GPU: AMD Radeon Pro 5500M
Operating System: macOS Big Sur 11.6
QGIS Install: Official All-in-one signed installer: QGIS macOS Installer Version 3.16 Long Term Release
QGIS Version: QGIS-LTR V 3.16.16-Hannover

Previously Attempted Solutions:
NASA AppEEARS – Does not have any SST products, that I have found.
NASA HEG Tool – Does not support CHRSST data, to the best of my current knowledge.

Requested Solution:
Functionality in QGIS

PO DAAC is not on currently using the Earthdata forum so they will not see this post. Please contact them with your issue at this address: podaac@podaac.jpl.nasa.gov
