COSPAR 2004 - 18-25 July, 2004 ABSTRACT

by genecarlfeldman » Fri Feb 13, 2004 8:38 am America/New_York

Dear Colleagues,

As a reminder, let me recall you that the COSPAR 2004 meeting is to be held in Paris (France), on 18-25 July, 2004. Among the various events planned during the COSPAR meeting, one is entitled: "Biological and Physical Oceanographic Processes from Satellite Data" (event number A2.1). A general description of the event can be found on the COSPAR web site and is also provided at the end of the message for information. Let me then encourage you to check the COSPAR 2004 web site and to contribute your research paper(s) to this A 2.1 Symposium.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE ABSTRACT DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO 29 FEBRUARY TO ALLOW SUBMISSION OF LATE ABSTRACTS. The Secretariat of COSPAR is pleased to inform you that the web page (copernicus.org) for the 35th COSPAR Scientific Assembly in Paris is open and accepting electronic submission of abstracts. Looking forward to seeing you in Paris.

With my very best regards,

Patrick Vincent

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE A2.1 OCEAN SYMPOSIUM

Over the last 25 years, physical and bio-geochemical oceanography has passed a major turning point thanks to the arrival of new measurement techniques on-board satellites. The global and accurate view of the ocean offered from space has permitted a better understanding of the variety of the involved mechanisms and their role in the earth environment. But studies and efforts are still needed to continue to improve our knowledge.

Topics of particular interest are:
- The determination of mass, heat transport and fluxes over the ocean and their interaction with atmosphere
- The development of new space-based techniques to monitor surface and subsurface parameters of the ocean
- The joint use of satellite, in-situ data with models to provide analysis and forecasts of the ocean in 3D
- The preparation of future global ocean observation systems for monitoring the ocean
- The carbon cycle in the ocean, the biological processes, and their impact on climate, biogeochemical cycles and productivity

The above five topics are the drivers of the symposium, and use of satellite data is course considered as the focus point within the discussion of these topics. In that respect, it is planned to organize sub-sessions within the A2.1 Ocean COSPAR event.

Two sub-sessions will deal with technical issues: (1) calibration and validation of new satellite data products, (2) data assimilation techniques. Six thematic sub-sessions are planned. The following topics are covered: (3) Space Data Requirements and Satellite Data Use in Coastal Oceanography (4) Ocean Data Systems ; Climatology of Ocean Parameters (5) Seasonal-to-Interannual-to-Decadal Variability (6) Wind/Wave Measurements from Space: Use in Sea-state and Ocean Forecasting Systems (7) Operational Oceanography Systems in the GODAE Framework (8) Biogeochemistry of the Oceanic Carbon CycleLast, if manageable, two sub-sessions may be organized jointly with A1.1 and A3.1 symposia. Their objectives are: (9) air-sea interactions (joint with event A1.1), (10) land-ocean interactions (joint with event A3.1)
