MODIS/AQUA reprocessing has begun

by genecarlfeldman » Fri May 14, 2004 1:10 pm America/New_York

To Members of the Ocean Color Community,

As promised earlier this week, the first official processing of the MODIS/AQUA data set within the Ocean Color Discipline Processing Group (OCDPG) at NASA/GSFC has begun.  Since the transition of MODIS Aqua processing to the OCDPG in February, much effort has been dedicated to establish a new baseline data set that the research community can use to conduct their studies with greater confidence in the data products.

As presented at the recent NASA Ocean Biogeochemistry Science Team meeting in Washington, DC (April 14-16), substantial progress has been made since February and this processing has been approved based on the most recent on-orbit calibrations provided by the MODIS Characterization Support Team (MCST) and corrections to the sensor polarization sensitivity tables.

These modifications have greatly improved the consistency between SeaWiFS and MODIS/Aqua derived products.  We recognize that there remain other refinements and corrections that still need to be considered, such as an expansion of the current baseline product suite, evaluation of the proper correction for bidirectional reflectance, improvement of the response vs. scan sensitivity, etc.  These further refinements are being actively examined by the OCDPG in collaboration with the MODIS Science Team, and other interested members of the research community and will be incorporated into future reprocessings as considered appropriate by the Science Team and the algorithm working groups recently established by the NASA Biogeochemistry Program Manager, Paula Bontempi. At this time, the OceanColor browser has been purged of the previous Level-2 data and the new data will appear as quickly as the processing produces them.  For anyone with questions about the options available on the web browser, we encourage you to read the extensive HELP page that is available by clicking on the button on the upper right corner of the browser or here:

https://oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov/cgi/browse.pl?sub=help.

We anticipate that the complete Aqua mission should be reprocessed within two weeks and will keep you posted as to the progress.

The forward stream has been updated to incorporate all of the improvements and all data subscriptions will reflect these changes.  An update to SeaDAS incorporating the latest refinements should be available before the reprocessing is completed.

Documentation for this processing can be found under the Validation and Documents sections of the OceanColor Web at https://oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov/. In particular, the summary of major changes with links to the detailed analyses and documentation can be found at:

https://oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov/reproc ... 2004/aqua/

Finally, we want to thank everyone for all their help and support during this transition and look forward to continuing our active and productive collaboration with the Ocean Color community.

With our best regards,
Members of the Ocean Color Discipline Processing Group
