Clarification of SeaWiFS data access

by genecarlfeldman » Fri Jan 07, 2005 8:52 am America/New_York

Good Morning,
Since my announcement on Monday regarding the end of the NASA/ORBIMAGE
contract on 23 December 2004, I have been asked a great many questions
by a number of you and wanted to clarify two key points. First, please be
assured that ALL the SeaWiFS data (level-1,2 and 3) that NASA has collected,
processed and archived from September 1997 through 23 December 2004 under
the terms of the previous and current contracts between NASA and ORBIMAGE
will still be available for use by the ocean color community under the same terms
as have applied since 1997, along with the MODIS ocean products that our group
is currently producing.

The terms and conditions that ORBIMAGE has outlined for access to SeaWiFS
data collected AFTER 23 December 2004 can be found here:

http://www.orbimage.com/seastar/SeaWiFS ... seFAQs.pdf

To specifically answer the question about what level of data product will be available,
here is the answer from the above-listed information page states:

ORBIMAGE-approved OrbView-2 research users will have access
to all GAC, LAC, HRPT and calibration L1A data files available
for the time period they have purchased, as long as all data are
used in accordance with the terms and agreement license for their
approved research project.

However, with NASA no longer having access to SeaWiFS data, the SeaWiFS
Project will not be in a position to update or validate the calibration parameters
required to process the level-1a data that ORBIMAGE intends to distribute.
ORBIMAGE's position regarding calibration of SeaWiFS data beyond 23 December
is presented in the webpage above.

Hope this clarifies some of the questions that I have been asked.

With my very best regards,
gene
