SSE Site Decomissioned

NASA Prediction Of Worldwide Energy Resources
Wednesday, June 13, 2018
We are pleased to announce that on June 13, 2018 the NASA’s Surface meteorology and Solar Energy (SSE) Data Archive web site will be replaced with the new data web portal at https://power.larc.nasa.gov with improved solar and meteorology data and greatly enhanced capabilities to facilitate access to NASA's solar insolation and meteorological data parameters. Rest assured that all parameters currently on SSE are now available at the new POWER web site although the parameters might be organized differently. Also note that we have endeavored to ensure that citations and links to the old SSE URL will be seamlessly redirected to the new POWER site.

The new POWER data archive offers all parameters on a ½ x ½ degree global grid through a GIS-enabled Data Access Viewer (DAV), ArcGIS Image Services, and an Application Program Interface (API) service that provides data in a number of formats including CSV, ASCII, JSON, ICASA, NetCDF, and geoTIFF. You will also note that in addition to access to the SSE parameters, the new POWER data portal provides direct access to NASA's solar insolation and meteorological data parameters customized for application to the Sustainable Buildings and Agroclimatology communities.

The surface solar energy parameters have been customized and validated from NASA/GEWEX Surface Radiation Budget project and the CERES (Clouds and Earth's Radiant Energy System) low latency FLASHFlux data set. The meteorological parameters are now based upon data from NASA's MERRA-2 (Modern Era Reanalysis-assimilation for Research and Applications) atmospheric reanalysis. The methodology documentation (https://power.larc.nasa.gov/docs/methodology/ ) includes updated definitions and parameter uncertainty information derived using surface measurements. A new users guide (https://power.larc.nasa.gov/docs/tutorials/data-access-viewer/user-guide/) and API documentation (https://power.larc.nasa.gov/docs/services/api/) have been developed to ease the transition to the new web portal.

We remind you that the data obtained from NASA's POWER website are in the public domain and free of any charges or fees. You may use them in your research, publications, and commercial applications with the request that you acknowledge usage (https://power.larc.nasa.gov/). We would be very pleased to receive your statements and use cases showing the value of the data products. This would be very helpful as we assess the value of these services to justify continuation.

We encourage you to send feedback (power-project@lists.nasa.gov), whether it’s a suggestion for a new parameter, a question about the new web site, or to report a problem with the new web site. Your feedback helps us to provide a more functional and useful product to the community.
