FTP access to ocean color data

by genecarlfeldman » Fri Jul 08, 2005 12:45 pm America/New_York

To users of the Ocean Color ftp site ftp://oceans.gsfc.nasa.gov :

In response to the increasing network security issues world-wide,
NASA and the Goddard Space Flight Center are in the process of
re-evaluating and revising its network access policies. This activity
has resulted in changes to network access controls at the Center
level, beyond our control. Those changes appear to be directly
impacting our project's ability to make our data products available
to the science community in a timely and reliable manner. While a
number of sites have had difficulties in accessing our ftp servers to
retrieve data, there are also a great many people who still seem to
be able to download the data they want without difficulty as the data
distribution statistics (http://oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov/cgi/ocdist_stats.cgi)
seem to indicate. We apologize for the inconvenience and are actively
working with the various networking groups to resolve any remaining
issues although we believe that as of this afternoon, all the known
problems that are under our control have been resolved.

If you find that you still have difficulty connecting to our ftp servers,
please make a note of the problem you encounter and pass it along to us so
that we can provide it to the Center security group to document these
instances and hopefully, allow them to come up with a set of access
procedures that will allow this legitimate use of the network while
maintaining the level of security that they require.

Try the following if you are having problems with your ftp connection:

First, try using "PASSIVE" ftp when connecting to our ftp servers. You
may need to enable this mode in your ftp client. Please check with your
local systems administrator if you need assistance.

If "PASSIVE" mode allows connection, but not data transfer, try
reconnecting using "ACTIVE" mode. Please check with your local systems
administrator if you need assistance.

If you continue to have difficulties accessing our ftp sites please send
mail to ocfadmin@oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov
