Details on these changes are described below.

There is an INSTRUCTIONS file located in the update03 directory on
our ftp site that will tell you how to apply this update. It is
also here for your convenience:

===================================================================
Instructions for installing SeaDAS 4.8 Update 03:

This update provides the newest MODIS Aqua calibration LUT's.
Note that you must run seadas_setup after installing this update,
prior to running seadas, so that the LUT environment variables
will be set correctly.

NOTE: If you have not installed SeaDAS 4.8 yet, you do need to
install this update after installing the main software, since this
update is not included in the main tar file distributions.

1. Go to your main $SEADAS directory:
cd $SEADAS
2. Anonymously ftp to samoa.gsfc.nasa.gov:
ftp samoa.gsfc.nasa.gov
3. After logged in, switch to binary mode:
bin
4. Change directory to where the update files are located:
cd seadas/seadas/update03
5. Get the zipped tar file for the update that corresponds to
your operating system:
get update03_rh73.tar.gz (for RedHat 7.3)
or
get update03_fc1.tar.gz (for Fedora Core 1)
or
get update03_fc2.tar.gz (for Fedora Core 2)
or
get update03_mac.tar.gz (for Mac OS-10.3)
or
get update03_sol28.tar.gz (for Solaris 2.8 64-bit)
or
get update03_sol27.tar.gz (for Solaris 2.7 64-bit)
or
get update03_irix.tar.gz (for Irix 6.5 32-bit)
6. Log off of ftp
bye
7. Unzip and extract the update files:
gunzip -c update03_rh73.tar.gz | tar xvf -
8. Change to the update03 directory:
cd update03
9. Make sure that your $SEADAS environment variable is set correctly:
setenv SEADAS /wherever/your/seadas4.8/is/located
(for c shell)
or export SEADAS=/wherever/your/seadas4.8/is/located
(for bash shell)
10. Run the update_03.csh script to install the files:
./update_03.csh
11. Run the seadas_setup script:

Some details concerning changes included in this Update:

1. Updated processing binaries to match production processing:

- aqua_l1bgen
- terra_l1bgen
- msl12
- l2bin
- l3bin
- smigen

2. New Aqua LUT's (V5.0.7.6a)

3. New Graphical User Interface(GUI)

A. We have implemented a major redesign of the SeaDAS GUI,
including the elimination of the Seadisp widget. The
Seadisp widget has been split into two separate functions
on the main SeaDAS window:

1) Display: the new Display button is a one-button loader for
all data types, and replaces the Seadisp->Load
menu. Some of the selections from the old Display
menu have been moved into the Processing menus.
The CZCS menu selections have been removed, as we
no longer support the old CZCS programs.

2) Utilities: the Utilities menu replaces the Seadisp->Functions
menu, and has been reorganized so that the
functions have a more logical grouping.

B. There is a new 'Update' menu in the main SeaDAS Window. It
currently has three selections:

1) Update utcpole.dat and leapsec.dat for MODIS processing.
You can also manually perform this task with the script
modis_update_utcpole_leapsec.csh. This script can be set
up as a weekly cron job.

2) Update Aqua calibration LUT's. You can also manually
perform this task with the script modis_update_luts.csh.
This script can also be set up as a weekly cron job.

3) Update Terra calibration LUT's. You can also manually
perform this task with the script modis_update_luts.csh.
This script can also be set up as a weekly cron job.

C. Though Seadisp no longer exists, old scripts that call seadisp
will still behave in the same way. For new scripts, we suggest
the use of the "clear_up" procedure in loops in order to clear
memory as opposed to "seadisp" or "seadisp,/quit".

4. MODIS L0 to L1B processing:

A. Seadas 4.8.3 is now in sync with the latest MODISL1DB package
release (version 1.1)

B. MODIS Level 1A and Geolocation processing:

1) A new feature checks utcpole.dat and leapsec.dat to see if
either file is older than 14 days, and then automatically
downloads them, unless the '-disable-utcpole_leapsec' flag
is set.

2) Terrain elevation correction is now enabled by default. If
the Digital Elevation Maps(DEM's) don't exist on a user's
hard drive, elevation correction is disabled and processing
continues.

C. New flags for command mode:

-satellite aqua Only required if filename is not 'a*'
or 'A*' or 'MOD00.P*' or 'P1540064*'
-satellite terra Only required if filename is not 't*'
or 'T*' or 'MOD00.A*' or 'P0420064*'
-a1 attitude_file1 Input attitude file 1 (chronological)
-a2 attitude_file2 Input attitude file 2 (chronological)
-e1 ephemeris_file1 Input ephemeris file 1 (chronological)
-e2 ephemeris_file2 Input ephemeris file 2 (chronological)
-save-log Save the Level 1A and geolocation
processing log files
-disable-utcpole_leapsec Disable auto-downloading of
utcpole.dat and leapsec.dat

D. MODIS L1B processing:

1) 500m (HKM) and 250m (QKM) L1B files are produced during
processing.

2) New flags for command mode:

-h L1B_HKM_filename Output MODIS L1B HKM HDF filename
-q L1B_QKM_filename Output MODIS L1B QKM HDF filename
-rlut REFL_LUT_filepath Full path and filename of Reflective LUT file
-elut EMIS_LUT_filepath Full path and filename of Emissive LUT file
-qlut QA_LUT_filepath Full path and filename of QA LUT file
-save-log Save the Level 1B processing log file

5. Various other changes:

A. No longer need to specify what kind of data file you want to
load, it auto-detects the data type.

B. Various processing GUI output filename fields are auto-populated now.

C. Added msl12 utilities.

D. Ability to display night-time sst data.

E. Removed old czcs processing programs.

F. Help system changes:

1) Added Firefox as a supported browser.

2) Updated various help pages.

3) Fixed some bugs in the help system.
