continuation of seawifs global data set

by genecarlfeldman » Wed Apr 11, 2007 10:00 am America/New_York

good morning,
it seems very appropriate that on this, the first morning of the ocean color research team meeting, nasa is very happy to announce that it has reached and signed a new contract with geoeye (the company formerly known as orbimage) that will provide the ocean color research community with continued access to the global (4 kilometer) seawifs data set. the new agreement which goes into effect today, provides for an additional one year of data under the same terms and conditions as have applied in the past, plus the ability to add four additional one year options based on data quality, programmatic need and budget priorities. for a mission that so many people thought would never get off the ground or that if it did, was given so little chance of lasting a year, we are now approaching a record ten years of continuous observations of the earth's biological response to climate change for both land and ocean. the dates to keep in mind are august 1st for the 10 year anniversary of the launch of seawifs and september 18th as the start of the continuous global data record. i look forward to posting the ten year anniversary image of the seawifs global biosphere but in the meantime, here is the current one spanning september 1997 through february 2007. congratulations to the entire ocean color community for an incredible achievement.
with my very best regards,
gene
