Changes to data distribution from the OB.DAAC and the OceanColor Web

by OB.DAAC - SeanBailey » Thu Dec 15, 2016 3:26 pm America/New_York

There are two significant changes coming soon that will impact user access to
the OceanColor Web services, including data distribution.

1) Switch to secure HTTPS connections

In order to comply with a federal mandate for US Government web services to use
HTTPS connections, all traffic via HTTP (port 80) to the OceanColor Web will be
redirected to use HTTPS (port 443). All of the OB.DAAC/OBPG supported web
sites now accept HTTPS connections. These include:

https://oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov
https://oceancolor.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov (alias for oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov)
https://oceandata.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov
https://seawifs.gsfc.nasa.gov
https://seabass.gsfc.nasa.gov
https://seadas.gsfc.nasa.gov
https://www.nasa.gov (/mission_pages/aquarius/overview/index.htm)
https://pace.gsfc.nasa.gov
https://arctic-colors.gsfc.nasa.gov

These websites will continue to accept HTTP (port 80) connections until 21 Dec
2016, at which point all traffic to these sites will be redirected to require
HTTPS (port 443).

For most access methods, the redirect will be transparent to the user.
However, users with locally developed scripts or utilities that do not support
an HTTP code 301 redirect may find that the scripts will fail. If you access
our servers non-interactively (i.e. via a mechanism other than a modern web
browser), you will want to modify your scripts to point to the HTTPS addresses
to avoid the enforced redirect.

2) EarthData Single Sign-On Login

As previously announced (see the OceanColor forum post), the
OceanColor Web will be finalizing the transition to the EarthData Login for
access to data and services. This will take effect by 06 Jan 2017.

Impacted services include data subscriptions, data order management, the
OceanColor Forum and data access for MERIS, HICO and GOCI L1B data. (Access to
these data products and OCForum have already been implemented). The
requirement for EarthData login authentication for all data products will come
at a later date.

If you do not already have an EarthData account, please see:

Regards,
Sean
