Instrument and Project Keywords Needed by ORNL DAAC

by ORNL - tammywbeaty » Fri Feb 04, 2022 3:20 pm America/New_York

ORNL DAAC needs 3 additions to the GCMD vocabularies, 2 in the project vocabulary and 1 in the instruments vocabulary.

1. Vocabulary: Instrument
Category: Earth Remote Sensing Instruments
Class: Passive Remote Sensing
Type: Spectrometers/Radiometers
Subtype: Imaging Spectrometers/Radiometers
ShortName: VSWIR
LongName: visible to short wave infrared
Description: Visible to short wave infrared (VSWIR) imaging spectrometer, the term VSWIR is synonymous to VIS-SWIR.

2. Vocabulary: Project
Bucket: G-I
ShortName: HyspIRI Airborne
LongName: Hyperspectral Infrared Imager Airborne
Description: The Hyperspectral Infrared Imager (HyspIRI) Airborne mission is a multi-year effort to collect seasonal visible to short wave infrared (VSWIR) spectrometer and thermal infrared (TIR) Radiometer data on the world’s ecosystems to provide information on natural disasters such as volcanoes, wildfires, and drought in advance of the HyspIRI satellite mission. HyspIRI campaigns make use of the Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) and the MODIS/ASTER Airborne Simulator (MASTER) facility instruments flown on a NASA ER-2 aircraft. The term HyspIRI-Prep is synonymous to HyspIRI Airborne.

3. Vocabulary: Project
Bucket: V-Z
ShortName: WDTS
LongName: Western Diversity Time Series
Description: The Western Diversity Time Series (formerly HyspIRI) campaign observes California’s ecosystems and provides critical information on natural disasters such as volcanoes, wildfires, and drought. WDTS aims to provide a benchmark on the state of ecosystems against which future changes can be assessed. WDTS, as its instruments identify vegetation type and health. The WDTS airborne campaign is a multi-year effort to collect seasonal visible to short wave infrared (VSWIR) spectrometer and thermal infrared (TIR) radiometer using both the Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) and the MODIS/ASTER Airborne Simulator (MASTER) remote sensing Instruments on a NASA ER-2 high-altitude platform.

@ORNL - tammywbeaty I have added these keywords to KMS. Please review below and allow 24 hours for them to show up in KMS and MMT. Thanks.

Instrument:
VSWIR > Visible to Short Wave Infrared: https://gcmd.earthdata.nasa.gov/kms/con ... 1e8cd06873

    Project:
HyspIRI Airborne > Hyperspectral Infrared Imager Airborne: https://gcmd.earthdata.nasa.gov/kms/con ... b019aa548e
        WDTS > Western Diversity Time Series: https://gcmd.earthdata.nasa.gov/kms/con ... 96f6978809

        Dear Tyler,

Thank you for your prompt attention. Our DAAC Scientist Dr. Yaxing Wei has determined that VSWIR is not an instrument it was planned to be an instrument for the HyspIRI Satellite Mission, but that missing never happened. Instead HyspIRI airborne used AVIRIS and MASTER instruments because they match the range defined for VSWIR. Can you remove that entry, I apologize for this inconvenience.

As for the two platforms keywords, I'm asking Yaxing to review/approve those now via the links you provided.

        Best,
        Tammy

@ORNL - tammywbeaty Please also note that there is a bug where the keywords will not show up in CMR and MMT. We expect to have this resolved by next Thursday. We apologize for the inconvenience.

        Dear Tyler,

Thank you for your help with adding keywords to GCMD vocabularies. We had some further discussion at the ORNL DAAC and improved the description for Project Keywords "HyspIRI Airborne" and "WDTS". Could you please help to update their descriptions in the GCMD Project vocabulary? Please note that their short names and long names remain unchanged. Feel free to let us know if you have any questions. Thanks!

Improved description for project "HyspIRI Airborne":
The Hyperspectral Infrared Imager (HyspIRI) airborne campaign was a multi-year effort (2013-2018) to demonstrate important science and applications research enabled by contiguous spectral data like that anticipated from the planned HyspIRI satellite mission. This airborne campaign collected seasonal data in the visible to shortwave infrared (VSWIR) and thermal infrared (TIR) spectral ranges using the Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) and the MODIS/ASTER Airborne Simulator (MASTER) remote sensing instruments aboard a NASA ER-2 high-altitude aircraft. These HyspIRI-like data were provided by the contiguous spectroscopic measurements of the AVIRIS, the full suite of MASTER TIR bands, or combinations of measurements from both instruments. The HyspIRI airborne campaign provided data for the study of vegetation type and health as a benchmark of the state of ecosystems as well as information on natural disasters such as volcanoes, wildfires, and drought. The term HyspIRI-Prep is synonymous to HyspIRI Airborne.

        Improved description for project "WDTS":
The Western Diversity Time Series (WDTS, formerly HyspIRI) airborne campaign is a multi-year effort to collect seasonal data in the visible to shortwave infrared (VSWIR) and thermal infrared (TIR) spectral ranges using both the Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) and the MODIS/ASTER Airborne Simulator (MASTER) remote sensing instruments aboard a NASA ER-2 high-altitude platform, simulating low-Earth orbit space flight. The WDTS airborne campaign observes California's ecosystems and provides critical information on natural disasters such as volcanoes, wildfires, and drought. It aims to provide a benchmark on the state of ecosystems against which future changes can be assessed with measurements that identify vegetation type and health.
