Extract lat/lon from AMSR-E Sea Ice Data

by EarthdataForumContributor » Thu Apr 28, 2022 4:33 pm America/New_York

I downloaded AMSR-E/Aqua Daily L3 12.5 km Brightness Temperature, Sea Ice Concentration, & Snow Depth Polar Grids to calculate sea ice concentrations in the northern hemisphere. Is there a way for me to extract the lat/lon coordinates of every pixel? Thank you!

AMSR-E sea ice data sets are provided in the Polar Stereographic projection. NSIDC provides gridded latitude and longitude NetCDF files that give the coordinates for the center of each grid cell. You can find the files at this link: https://nsidc.org/data/nsidc-0771. These ancillary data for NSIDC Polar Stereographic Grids are provided for each resolution (6.25 km, 12.5 km, and 25 km) for the north and south hemispheres.

Since you are interested in the 12.5 km AMSR-E sea ice data set for the northern hemisphere, you will need to download
NSIDC0771_LatLon_PS_N12.5km_v1.0.nc located in https://daacdata.apps.nsidc.org/pub/DATASETS/nsidc0771_polarstereo_anc_grid_info/.

You can find more information about the ancillary data for NSIDC Polar Stereographic Grids at https://nsidc.org/sites/nsidc.org/files/technical-references/NSIDC-0771_PSGrids.pdf.
