The Earthdata Forum provides a central online location where data users can interact with subject-matter experts from NASA’s Distributed Active Archive Centers (DAACs) to discuss data applications and research needs and get answers to specific questions about accessing, viewing, and manipulating NASA Earth observation data. Current Forum participants include: NASA's Atmospheric Science Data Center (ASDC), Crustal Dynamics Data Information System (CDDIS), Global Hydrometeorology Resource Center DAAC (GHRC DAAC), Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC), Land Processes DAAC (LP DAAC), Level-1 and Atmosphere Archive and Distribution System DAAC (LAADS DAAC), Ocean Biology DAAC (OB.DAAC), Oak Ridge National Laboratory DAAC (ORNL DAAC), and the Global Change Master Directory (GCMD).
The NSIDC DAAC distributes data on the cryosphere—the frozen parts of our planet—and other related geophysical data, which are collected from NASA Earth-observing satellite missions, airborne campaigns, and field observations. These data can be used to study topics relating to snow cover, sea ice, ice sheets, ice shelves, glaciers, frozen ground, soil moisture, climate interactions, and more.
NASA Earth-observing satellite and airborne missions archived and distributed by the NSIDC DAAC include the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-EOS (AMSR-E); the Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2); the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS); Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP); the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS); Operation IceBridge; and several others. Data from these missions are available through the NSIDC DAAC’s website and NASA’s Earthdata Search.
Located in Boulder, Colorado, the NSIDC DAAC was formally created in 1993 and has operated out of the NSIDC at the University of Colorado Boulder ever since. In addition to archiving and distributing data, the NSIDC DAAC focuses on broadening the reach and relevance of NASA data by making data products more accessible to users, helping users work with the data, and expanding the utility of the data to more users.
