Status of Aqua and GPM

Hi,

Can someone tell me the status of Aqua (out since August 16) and GPM (out since August 19)? What is their status?

Hi Jeanie. Aqua has suffered an anomaly with it's Solid State Recorder (SSR) in that data from all instruments is corrupted on transmission to Earth. An attempt to reset the instrument is being planned to take place during the week of 8/30. No data from any instruments are available or are archived since 8/16, 9:26 UT EXCEPT for data normally received through direct broadcast. So, it's possible that LANCE may have some MODIS and other instrument data. However, there is no CERES data available from Aqua since the anomaly. I hope that addresses your question. We probably will not have another update until Sept. 4 unless the schedule slips.

Regarding GPM:

On August 19, 2020 at approximately 11 UTC, the GPM Mission Operations Center (MOC) stopped receiving data from the satellite. While the satellite and the instruments are healthy, the Flight Operations Team (FOT) is working to safely reestablish nominal operations. Return to data collection mode may take days to a week, which will result in a permanent data gap in the GPM Radar and Radiometer products. IMERG Near Real-Time will continue to be produced but obviously no GMI data will be included in either the Early or Late product.

Update on August 26, 2020: The status report on GPM recovery indicates that procedures for returning GPM to normal science observational mode are proceeding as planned. We will provide another update when science data is again being received to define the outage period.

From the Precipitation Processing System (PPS) at Goddard Space Flight Center:

"Dear Science User,

The GPM spacecraft experienced an anomaly that caused an interruption of
all science instrument data beginning on 8/19/2020 around 12:00 UT.

GMI instrument data restarted collection on 8/26/2020 at 13:25 UT
DPR instrument data restarted collection on 8/26/2020 at 22:09 UT

All data collection is now nominal and instruments are in good condition.

Near-real-time products are currently being produced and distributed.

Production and distribution of research quality products remains on
hold. PPS is waiting for definitive orbit definitions during the
downtime and anticipates distribution restarting next week.

Both GMI and DPR had an overpass of Hurricane Laura around 03:00 UT on
8/27/2020.
