Does you pattern start with "A2*" or perhaps ends with "*L3b_MO_RRS.nc"? With R2022, the file naming convention changed:
https://oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/filenaming-convention/

For now, we've just marked the R2018 files as obsolete in our database, which keeps them from showing up on our direct access page and L3 browser, but doesn't prevent the file search API from finding them. Those would end in May 2022, since that's when we initiated the reprocessing.

The API has options for "Level-3 binned" and "Level-3 mapped". You are seeing a difference because you chose the "Level-3 binned" option and Sean posted results for "Level-3 mapped" products. They are both correct searches. Currently, from the API, two searches are necessary if you want both (all Level-3 binned and mapped) sets of data products.

Here are some resources for search and download options and product level descriptions:

I had been using A*, which in theory should allow both 2018 and 2022 data to show up, but good to know in any case that the api will primarily return 2018 data under this scheme. many thanks

No, if the pattern begins with "A*" but ends in "*L3b_MO_RRS.nc", you'll get the R2018 data (well, until we delete it).
If you want to get the R2022 data, the pattern should be "*L3b.MO.RRS*". Note the "." where "_" once was...

https://oceandata.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/directdataaccess/
(under Level-3 Binned / Mapped, annual files would be in the <YEAR>/001 subdirectories for the sensor)

...or from the file search utility:
https://oceandata.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/api/file_search/
(for the current web interface, use "*L3b.YR*" in the filename pattern - a soon to be released update will allow searches for L3 time periods without the need of the search pattern)

BTW, what URL were you using that produced the error page?

The below attached URL i am using for downloading the Level3 annual Rrs data
"https://oceandata.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/ob/getfile/AQUA_MODIS.200501001_200501365.L3m.YR.RRS.Rrs_412.4km.nc"

AQUA_MODIS.200501001_200501365.L3m.YR.RRS.Rrs_412.4km.nc is not a filename we have ever produced. It should be:
AQUA_MODIS.20050101_20051231.L3m.YR.RRS.Rrs_412.4km.nc
