Corrosion

by dinesh_5497 » Fri Jun 30, 2023 1:05 am America/New_York

According to ISO 9223-2012, we have a formula for R(Corrosion), in that formula we have to include chloride and sulfate.
From MERRA, which parameters i need to consider (https://gmao.gsfc.nasa.gov/global_mesoscale/dyamond_phaseII/docs/DYAMOND_PHASEII_4km_Ocean_6km_Atmosphere_FileSpec.pdf)

We have many sea salt and many sulfate in it.

For Chloride (out of seven which we have to consider, also can bins be added together?)
1.Sea Salt wet deposition
2.Sea Salt dry deposition
3.Sea Salt sedimentation
4.Sea Salt surface mass concentration
5.Sea Salt Mixing Ratio
6.Sea Salt Convective Scavenging
7. Sea Salt Extinction AOT [550 nm] - PM 1.0 um

For Sulfate
1.Sulfate wet deposition
2.Sulfate dry deposition
3.Sulfate Settling
4.Sulfate Convective Scavenging
5.Sulfate Emission

Formula
rcorr = 1.77·Pd ·exp(0,020·RH+ f St )+ 0,102·S d ·exp(0.033·RH+ 0.040·T )
fSt = 0.150·(T – 10) when T <= 10 °C; otherwise 0.054·(T – 10)
where
rcorr is first-year corrosion rate of metal, expressed in micrometres per year (μm/a);
T is the annual average temperature, expressed in degrees Celsius (°C);
RH is the annual average relative humidity, expressed as a percentage (%);
Pd is the annual average SO2 deposition, expressed in milligrams per square metre per day
[mg/(m2d)];
Sd is the annual average Cl deposition, expressed in milligrams per square metre per day
[mg/(m2d)].

Hi,

If the question is, can the bins be added together, for SO2, the bins for SU should not be added. SO2 is SU tracer #2, so the total deposition would be SUWT002+SUSV002+SUSD002+SUDP002, with the units of kg/m^2/s properly converted to mg/m^2/day

For Cl, that would require some scaling that we do not have.

I hope this helps

Hi Mike
Thanks for the reply
For chloride will you suggest to add all chloride bins or is there any tracer associated with it.
and do you think scaling will have bigger influence?

Also what is SUSD002?
Can Sulfate mass concentration be skipped?
Could you tell something about Sulfate Convective Scavenging, what does that mean, any referral doc?

After consulting with our aerosol group, we do not have experience with Cl. There is not a Cl tracer.

You have mentioned DYAMOND and MERRA(2?). Each are different projects, DYAMOND is newer, but there may be more information under MERRA-2: https://gmao.gsfc.nasa.gov/reanalysis/MERRA-2/docs/

Please check the aerosol documentation there, as well as the aerosol papers in the AMS special collection.

Apart from MERRA2, is there any other source where i can get chloride in terms of aerosols.

Hello
My purpose is to find how much chlorine is deposited into the wind turbines.
consider wind turbine height is 200m from the ground.
For that purpose, can i use SSSMASS25, do i need to scale the value or directly use it.

Hi Mike
I will be requiring sulfate deposition around 100-200m from ground level, can i directly use the value or some downscaling is required.
If so is there any scaling factors readily available
