ORNL DAAC Request for New GCMD Project: CARTA-2005

The ORNL DAAC needs a new GCMD project vocabulary entry, here are the details:

Short name: CARTA-2005
Long name: Costa Rica Airborne Research and Technology Applications 2005

Description: The CARTA-2005 project was a collaborative effort between the Centro Nacional de Alta Tecnologia (CENAT) of Costa Rica and NASA. The USGS National Wetlands Research Laboratory in Lafayette, Louisiana and the Department of Energy Remote Sensing Laboratory (RSL) in Las Vegas, Nevada also provided collaboration and support. In support of the CARTA-2005 Project, NASA deployed a high-altitude WB-57 aircraft from February 26 to April 8, 2005 to San Jose, Costa Rica. The WB-57 acquired MODIS/ASTER Airborne Simulator (MASTER) multi-spectral digital imagery; HyVista HyMap hyperspectral imagery; Leica RC-30 metric camera natural color aerial photography; and Cirrus Digital Camera Systems (DCS) color infrared data through 28 flights over large portions of the country. The project’s objectives were to acquire airborne multispectral digital imagery and photographic data over Costa Rica for the following objectives: 1) assess land use/land cover to assist in developing land use policy and a land use database; 2) tropical forest ecosystems research; 3) tropical agricultural research; 4) study volcanic activity and volcanic hazards; 5) urban and regional planning; and 6) update national cartographic database.
