Help Looking for and Downloading Climate Change Variables for Research on Agricultural Productivity in Peru
Hello everyone! It’s a pleasure to be here. I’m a new member of this community, and I’m excited to be part of such a knowledgeable group! I’m currently working on a project that focuses on the effects of climate change on agricultural productivity in Peru. As part of my research, I’m particularly interested in analyzing the following data:
-Land Surface Temperature: Temperature anomalies, extreme heat events, heating degree days, and daily maximum and minimum temperatures.
-Precipitation: Precipitation variability, accumulated precipitation, extreme precipitation events, and drought indices.
I’ve been reading through and exploring the database, but I’m having a hard time finding the specific data I need and understanding exactly what to look for. There’s a lot of information available (which is great!), but as a rookie when it comes to working with this type of data, I’m unsure where and how to search for the exact variables I need.
I would truly appreciate any guidance you can provide, and I’m grateful to be starting my journey in this forum. If you need more details about my project or the climate variables I’m researching, please feel free to ask! Any feedback or advice is greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time and assistance!
Best regards,
Brayan J. Mora

Hi Brayan,
I see there are about 8,712 files to download, I wonder if the browser is limiting the download size? Can you try a different option, wget seems to work well: https://github.com/nasa/LPDAAC-Data-Resources/blob/main/guides/bulk_download_using_wget.md
Possibly a different browser might work.
We have some projection documentation: https://appeears.earthdatacloud.nasa.gov/help
Please note the gdalwarp link that gives more information also.
Thanks,
Brett

Hello Brayan,
The NASA POWER project provides the variables you are interested in. While we don't provide temperature anomalies, we have the temperatures themselves. From there you can decide on what period for averaging then producing anomalies. We have a data viewing and ordering tool, https://power.larc.nasa.gov/data-access-viewer/. There are many help pages linked through the main website too. https://power.larc.nasa.gov/
Hope this gets you started!

Hello Colleen,
Thank you for your quick and helpful response! I really appreciate you pointing me toward the NASA POWER project and its resources. I’ll definitely start exploring the data viewer and ordering tool to work with the temperature data I need.
If I have any further questions along the way, I hope it’s okay to reach out again. Thanks once more for your guidance, I truly appreciate it!

Hi Brayan,
Another option that may help is the LPDAAC AppEEARS tool: https://appeears.earthdatacloud.nasa.gov/
It has many of our products available through it including the MOD/MYD21 products: https://lpdaac.usgs.gov/product_search/?query=mod21&status=Operational&view=cards&sort=title
AppEEARS can do either point or area requests and will output both raster images and .csv files. Please let us know if you have any questions.
Thanks,
Brett

Re: Help Looking for and Downloading Climate Change Variables for Research on Agricultural Productivity in Peru
Hi Brett,
Thank you for the information and the links to the LPDAAC AppEEARS tool and the MOD/MYD21 products. I appreciate your help!
Regarding the AppEEARS tool, I have tried the area extraction feature for a whole country. However, when attempting to download data, it seems to exceed the maximum size allowed. I suspect this might be because I’m trying to download data from 2007 to 2023. Is there a tool that can provide me with this amount of historical data for one region, or is this too much information to handle at once?
Additionally, I would like to learn more about the projections feature within the output extraction. Is there any documentation available that can guide me through its use?
Thanks again for your assistance; any help, feedback, and guidance would be greatly appreciated!
Best regards,
Brayan

Hi Brayan,
I see there are about 8,712 files to download, I wonder if the browser is limiting the download size? Can you try a different option, wget seems to work well: https://github.com/nasa/LPDAAC-Data-Resources/blob/main/guides/bulk_download_using_wget.md
Possibly a different browser might work.
