Issues loading sample OCI file

by bethanycampbell » Sat Nov 09, 2024 12:28 am America/New_York

Hi, I downloaded the Level-2 OCI AOP file on this website: https://oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov/data/pace/format/

and downloaded SeaDAS. I went through the process outlined here:
https://seadas.gsfc.nasa.gov/downloads/

Notably, regardless of which tag I use (V2024.5, V2024.6, or V2024.7), the optional arguments --ocia, --ocip, and --ocis are not found. That's my first issue... second, when I try to load the .nc file downloaded at the above link, it does not show up in the file finder. It also doesn't show up when I use the file finder in the l3mapgen etc. processors to try and find it (this is my first time ever using SeaDAS, so I'm trying to learn but can't find much info on what could be causing this it to not appear).

Thank you so much for any help!

These were pre-launch proxies for OCI data. They are no longer supported.

--ocia install PACE OCI AVIRIS files
--ocip install PACE OCI PRISM files
--ocis install PACE OCI Simulated data files

That sample file link is bad and points to a pre-launch simulated L1B file.
I'll talk with the page owners to get this updated.

You can get actual OCI data via the Direct Data Access page.

Hi Tommy,

Thank you so much for your response! Unfortunately, I also tried to upload an actual data file and it similarly does not appear in the finder window. I assume running those lines you included would download data directly into SeaDAS? Unfortunately only --oci works, the rest say they are not found. Do you have any idea what could be causing that? Thank you again!

Can you specify the version of SeaDAS that you are using and the platform you are installing it on?

--oci is the argument to the install_ocssw script that installs the OCI processing environment to your SeaDAS ocssw/ directory.

--ocia, --ocip and --ocis are no longer supported by install_ocssw.

SeaDAS does not open the files from remote locations.

You need to download the file from the directdataaccess site to your local computer, then SeaDAS will be able to read it.

Hi Tommy,

Thank you again so much for your response. I am trying to use SeaDAS 9.1.0 and I'm on a Mac. I have downloaded the data files to my local computer, but they aren't showing up in the app's finder when I try to import data. No files are, actually. I tried to see if it was an issue with SeaDAS not having permission to view those folders, but nothing in my settings indicates that it can't read the folders.

So even though --ocia etc. are still listed as available bundles, they actually aren't anymore?

Thank you again so much for your assistance in this matter.

Bethany

SeaDAS no longer supports pre-launch PACE simulation files.

Regarding why no files show up in your SeaDAS finder, it is likely a Mac permissions issue on your particular directories. SeaDAS does support drag and drop (which could be a workaround for you). Your Mac should have prompted you for permissions at some point. I'm not sure where Mac is storing these permissions. You might look in your Mac's "System Settings >> Java" for some security setting which might be blocking SeaDAS from viewing your directories. A complete reinstall of SeaDAS might trigger the Mac directory permissions prompt for you.

... Adding to my response. You can control your Mac file finder view permissions here "System Settings >> Privacy & Security >> File and Folders". Go here and unwind any java apps (which is what SeaDAS is using) and grant permissions.

If this doesn't work, try putting your data files elsewhere on your computer, as files on your Desktop and in your Downloads folder are where Mac is trying to safeguard.

Thank you so much! I had to move it to my home directory, which is the only place not showing up as empty in SeaDAS. I looked under "Files and Folders" in my system preferences but there is no option to add SeaDAS to it (even after unlocking the settings, the add "+" button is greyed out), it only shows MATLAB and a few other applications. I haven't watched the YouTube video you linked yet, but I will. For now, I am very happy to be able to load this one file! Thank you again for your help!
