The distinction between nFLH and FLH

by tf454479505 » Wed Nov 13, 2024 5:53 am America/New_York

Dear Ocean Color Teams:

I am interested in using the MODIS-Aqua FLH data, but I noticed that only nFLH data is available. And I observed that the maximum value of nFLH can reach 3.8, which is surprising for normalized data. Could you please clarify why the nFLH values can exceed 1? Is nFLH essentially just FLH calculated using nLw? Is it called normalized FLH because it uses normalized Lw, rather than normalizing the final FLH result? Is this correct?

I'm looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Thomas.

Hi Thomas,

Yes, the normalized water-leaving radiance is used in nFLH calculation rather than normalizing FLH. You may want to refer to the following ATBD and the corresponding reference for more details regarding the nFLH algorithm: https://oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov/resources/atbd/nflh/

Hope this helps,
Guoqing
