Method for compositing data available in Level 3 & 4 Browser

by lmgarzio » Fri Nov 08, 2024 11:14 am America/New_York

What is the method for compositing chlor_a and sst_triple data available in the Level 3 & 4 Browser https://oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov/l3/? I'm specifically interested in "Monthly". I checked the help (https://oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov/l3/help/) and all I can find is that it is a composite, and there is no description of the specific compositing method in the .nc files I downloaded. I'm assuming it's a monthly average but I can't find anything to confirm.

The monthly files are indeed composites of the data collected for the month. Details of the bin file format and how the compositing is done can be found in the SeaWiFS pre-launch TM series Volume 32. Some of elements described in that TM are no longer done (e.g. the maximum likelihood estimator appoach), but information on how the data are stored in the bin files and the means computed fom that information is still accurate (spoiler alert, it's effectively a naive mean).

Sean
