geolocation subset from MOD03

by LP DAAC - dgolon » Tue Jul 08, 2025 9:50 am America/New_York

Posting on behalf of a user:

I am using the MOD14/MYD14 Level-2 active fire products. I can only find the latitude/longitude for fire pixels in the hdf file. However, I also care about the location of 'no-fire' pixels.
While MOD03/MYD03 files provide this, their large size is impractical for my use case.

Are there:

Tools to extract only the geolocation subset from MOD03?

Python libraries to calculate coordinates from MODIS metadata?

Thanks for any tips!

If the need is only geolocation information for each granule, they can use LAADS Terra and Aqua geoMeta, extracted from MxD03 and stored in text file format, available at:
https://ladsweb.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov/archive/geoMeta/61/
Otherwise, the simplest and easiest way is to use LAADS post-processing tool available through FindData interface (final step in ordering process), for example as:
https://ladsweb.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov/search/order/1/MOD03--61
