Query Regarding CERES EBAF TOA Shortwave Flux Analysis and Cloud Information Usage
I am currently conducting an analysis using the CERES EBAF TOA Shortwave Radiation Flux data. To complement my analysis, I would like to incorporate cloud information.
I have noticed that the cloud data provided within the EBAF product is characterized as “daynight” . My primary question is whether I should proceed with using this “daynight” cloud data for my analysis.
Specifically, I am concerned whether nighttime cloud information would be relevant or have any significant impact on the analysis of shortwave radiation flux, which is inherently a daytime phenomenon.
Alternatively, I am considering using the daytime cloud products from the SSF1deg dataset. Would using the SSF1deg daytime cloud data be a more appropriate approach given my analysis of TOA shortwave flux?

The EBAF-TOA uses data from Terra-Aqua from July 2002 through March 2022. During this period, using the Terra or Aqua SSF1deg product would not provide the complete picture due to the difference in morning and afternoon clouds during the day. The Terra-Aqua FluxByCldTyp, https://ceres-tool.larc.nasa.gov/ord-tool/jsp/FluxByCldTypSelection.jsp, has only daytime clouds that use both instruments. Before July 2002, EBAF-TOA only used Terra data with the SSF1deg being the only product available. Starting with April 2022, EBAF-TOA only used NOAA-20 inputs, during that period either SSF1deg or FLuxByCldTyp should provide consistent cloud information.
