MODIS reprocessing plan

by danielsfj » Mon Oct 13, 2025 5:29 am America/New_York

Hello

We are using MODIS data to study changes over a long temporal scale on coastal zones. Our current dataset extends up to 2022, and we are planning to expand it. We would like to know if there are any reprocessing efforts planned for the MODIS archive, particularly for the years between 2022 and the present.

The next planned reprocessing for MODIS Aqua ocean color data will not take place until the mission has reached its end. NASA budgets and priorities are still not finalized, so I cannot provide a reliable estimate as to when that reprocessing will be accomplished. That said, I can say that changes in orbit combined with on-orbit calibration "challenges" will likely not be fully correctable and so the post-2022 data will likely be of lower reliability for assessing long-term changes. You may want to look at VIIRS data or OCI data from the PACE mission for more recent data.

Regards,
Sean
