NOAA-21 VIIRS Version 2 BRDF, NBAR, and Albedo Products Released

by LP DAAC - jwilson » Thu May 14, 2026 10:39 am America/New_York

The Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC) has released an expansion of the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Version 2 Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF), Nadir BRDF-Adjusted Reflectance (NBAR), and Albedo products, along with a Terrain Corrected Geolocation product. These products include variables for reflectance, albedo, and anisotropy.

This VIIRS Version 2 release includes data products from the NOAA-21 satellite, which was launched in November 2022 and was previously called Joint Polar Satellite System-2 (JPSS-2). Capitalizing on the success of instruments on the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) and NOAA-20 platforms, NOAA-21 features four similar instruments that take measurements related to atmospheric composition; the carbon cycle, ecosystems, and biogeochemistry; weather and climate; and the water and energy cycles.

Learn more about the BRDF, NBAR, and Albedo products by clicking the links in the Referenced Datasets section below. The links also provide the Digital Object Identifier for the datasets and several styles for properly citing the data.

Explore and access these new VIIRS Version 2 data products using NASA’s Earthdata Search (VJ243IA, VJ243DNBA, VJ243MA, VJ243C). Please contact User Services with any questions.
