CHIRPS-GEFS_precip_v12

by gis4tech » Wed Jul 15, 2026 8:03 am America/New_York

Hi,

I have a script that automatically downloads the CHIRPS-GEFS precipitation forecasts from CHIRPS-GEFS_precip_v12, and it has been working correctly until the beginning of July. Since then, all requests for the 5-, 10-, and 15-day accumulated forecasts return 404 errors. After checking the directories manually, I noticed that there don't seem to be any accumulated forecast files generated during July. For example, under 05day/precip_mean/, the latest file available is data-mean_20260630_20260704.tif.

I also download the daily forecasts from daily_16day_created/YYYY/MM/. However, the 2026/07/ directory does not exist. Is this a temporary issue that will be fixed, or has the directory structure changed?

Thank you.

Dear User,

Thank you for contacting us about your data access issue. The data you are looking to obtain is not something we archive at NASA GES DISC. The CHIRPS data you seek is managed by the University of California (UC) Santa Barbara, here: https://www.chc.ucsb.edu/data/chirps-gefs

We recommend reaching out to their Climate Hazards Center (CHC) via email for assistance with this data: chc-help@geog.ucsb.edu

Additionally, we would like to alert you to a message on their website regarding the previous versions of CHIRPS-GEFS data:
"Data Update (May 2026): CHC will soon exclusively produce the CHIRPS3-GEFS forecast data product, which uses CHIRPS version 3 for bias correction. CHIRPS2-GEFS data production will end on July 1, 2026. This change is in line with this being the final year of CHIRPS version 2 data production. December 2026 will be the final month of CHIRPS2 data."

This may answer your original questions, but we still encourage you to reach out to the UC Santa Barbara CHC team using the above email address for additional assistance and more information, if needed.

Thank you, and please let us know if you have any additional questions or concerns.

Regards,
GES DISC User Services
