Thank you for providing the sample locations and for your patience while we investigated the elevation discrepancies.

We reviewed the sample locations by comparing the elevations from the individual ASTER DEM scenes with your GCP values and the ASTER Mosaic DEM. Our analysis showed that the quality and elevation values can vary among individual ASTER DEM scenes. Some scenes produced elevations that were reasonably consistent with the GCP values, while others returned NoData values or elevations that differed substantially.

This variability is expected because each individual ASTER DEM scene is processed independently. Although the same processing methodology is applied, the quality of the resulting DEM can vary from scene to scene depending on the characteristics of the input stereo imagery, cloud cover, atmospheric conditions, input data quality, and the processing outcome. As a result, differences in elevation accuracy among individual scenes are a known characteristic of the product.

If your application requires a more consistent, high-fidelity elevation product, we recommend using the ASTER Global Digital Elevation Model (ASTER GDEM: https://doi.org/10.5067/ASTER/ASTGTM.003), which is generated from multiple observations and is intended to provide a more spatially consistent elevation dataset.
