Opening MODIS MYD02HKM (500 m) / MOD02HKM (500 m) in SeaDAS

by cassandranormandin » Wed Apr 26, 2017 4:01 am America/New_York

Hello,
I am actually working with MODIS imagery on SeaDAS 7.4 :
-  MOD02QKM (250 m) / MOD02HKM (500 m) for Terra
-  MYD02QKM (250 m) / MYD02HKM (500 m) for Aqua
I succeed to open MOD02QKM (250 m) and MYD02QKM (250 m) without problem and I could work on it. But with MYD02HKM (500 m) and MOD02HKM (500 m), a window with SeaDAS warning appears saying « No appropriate reader found » for the selected image. I don’t know what is the problem.

Thank you
Sincerely,
Cassandra Normandin

Opening MODIS MYD02HKM (500 m) / MOD02HKM (500 m) in SeaDAS

Hi Cassandra,

How did you load these files into SeaDAS?  You need to specifically tell SeaDAS which reader to use, by selecting from the menu  File -> Import -> MODIS (MOD,MXD,MYD).
Please let us know if this works for you

thanks
Danny

Hi Danny,

Thank you for your answer.
I did what you say to me to do, but it does not work.
I have a SeaDAS warning message saying "Cannot decode the selected product fille".

Thank you,
Cassandra

Hi Cassandra,

Try this: go to Tool -> Module Manager
Select the tab "Available Modules" then find and select "MODIS (MOD,MXD,MYD) Product Reader" then select "Install"
When you then press OK and leave the Module Manager it should install this reader.
Close SeaDAS and relaunch and see if this fixes the problem.

If this does not work, you might download the software BEAM 5.0, (http://www.brockmann-consult.de/cms/web/beam/releases)
this contains the file reader for MODAPS files, and this is the same file reader being used in SeaDAS for the MODAPS files.  Let us know if your files can be loaded in BEAM.  If so then we should be able to update SeaDAS with the file reader of BEAM.

Another possibility: MODAPS files come from particular collections.
Collection 6: ftp://ladsweb.nascom.nasa.gov/allData/6
Collection 5: ftp://ladsweb.nascom.nasa.gov/allData/5

You could determine which collection of data you are using and then try to see if a file from the other collection works.  The issue could be a reader mismatch.

Please let us know if any of these options work.
thanks
Danny

Hi Danny,

Thank you very much again for your reply.
The module called "MODIS (MOD,MXD,MYD)" is already installed and "active" as state.
The data that I used came from particular collection, I've checked with your links. With an other collection, it works. But with MOD02HKM the problem is still here...

I tried to open it with BEAM and I had the same error as in SeaDAS "No appropriate reader found for MYD02HKM.A2016024.1335.006.2016025160052.hdf".
But for MYD02QKM, I have no problem of reading...

Thank you,
Cassandra

Hi Cassandra,

Try SNAP (http://step.esa.int/main/download/)
This is a new ESA tool which also uses the file reader that you need and this would use the latest version of the reader.  If it does not work in SNAP, then try posting on both the SNAP and BEAM forums and hopefully they can get a fix in for this.  Right now we are just using a copy of their reader.

Let us know if this works or if they resolve this in SNAP and we will see about getting the fix into SeaDAS.

Sorry for the runaround, please note that ESA's (SNAP and BEAM) and NASA's SeaDAS all share many internal software tools though these tools do diverge due to revisions and customizations.

Hi Danny,

It was only a problem of file..
I've downloaded exactly the same, and this time it works well!

Thank you,
Cassandra
