Regarding the resolution of MODIS SST after reprojcetion

by swathy » Sun Jan 21, 2018 6:32 am America/New_York

Hi,

I am curious whether it is necessary to make the resolution of MODIS SST to 4 km after re-projection though MODIS SST level 2 product is available at a resolution of 1 km.
Thanking you in advance.

Swathy.

Regarding the resolution of MODIS SST after reprojcetion

Hi Swathy,

Note that MODIS pixel sizes are  1 kilometer at nadir only and increase
in size away from the center of each scan.  This is the reason that our
official level-3 bin sizes for MODIS are 4.64 kilometers (i.e. 21.5 square
kilometers).  See https://oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/format/l3bins/ .

You are welcome to project level-2 MODIS data to 1-kilometer resolution,
but you must make allowances (either by supersampling or by interpolation)
for the larger areas covered by pixels away from center scan, or you will
get holes (i.e. regions of no data) in your final image.

Regards,
Norman
