File naming inconsistencies

by olliegator » Wed Dec 11, 2019 2:46 am America/New_York

Hi,
With the new file naming convention, the file list now has some inconsistencies.
For example for the same scene we have:
A2002185160000.L2_LAC_OC.nc
AQUA_MODIS.20020704T160005.L2.SST.nc

Besides the change in the naming convention, the new SST files now contain the seconds in the name which I think were not present before.
Will the OC file naming be aligned with the SST file naming in the future?

Another thing that I noticed is that the SST file names have differences. For example:
AQUA_MODIS.20020704T160005.L2.SST.nc
AQUA_MODIS.20191210T160001.L2.SST.NRT.nc

Which will be the final naming convention here?

Best regards,
Miguel

File naming inconsistencies

Miguel,
When the ocean color reprocessing occurs (likely Spring 2020), the OC filenames will follow the new convention.
Yes, the old convention used a nominal 5 minute granule boundary for the time for MOIDS (6 minutes for VIIRS)
and so always had 00 for the seconds element.  The new convention is based on the time of the first valid
scanline in the file, and quite often will not fall exactly on the minute.

NRT in the filename indicates near real-time.  These data are processed as soon as possible and so may not have
used the best possible ancillary inputs, nor have the refined calibration (the MODIS instruments receive a monthly
calibration adjustment to keep up with the degradation of these aging sensors).  Once the "refined" processing occurs,
the filenames will no longer include the "NRT" element.
