Is there an API for spatially subsetting and downloading GEDI data?

by nathanmthomas » Thu Dec 16, 2021 11:34 am America/New_York

Is there an API/python workflow for spatially subsetting GEDI data prior to downloading? I see that there're ways to manually subset data using Earthdata Search, but this is not suitable for a large number of geometries. I also see that the LP DAAC have tools for subsetting GEDI data but this is only done after the data has been downloaded. Is there a way to do the pre-download spatial subsetting and download automatically through an API/python?

Our LP DAAC data representative is in contact with the Subject Matter Expert and will provide additional details once we hear back from them.
Thank you for your patience.

Hi,
Sorry but at this time there is not a way to that. When the next version of GEDI is released it will then be compatible with AppEEARS: https://lpdaacsvc.cr.usgs.gov/appeears/
So at that time pre-download processing including subsetting spatially and spectrally will be available and much less problematic then the Earthdata Search tool route for large orders.
Thanks,
Brett

@nathanmthomas ,

At this time there is no public API or web service that can spatially subset GEDI data prior to downloading. The GEDI helper scripts and tutorials produced by the LP DAAC do require a local copy of the data before any processing/subsetting occurs.

Indeed, Earthdata Search is able to perform spatial and layer subsets but it is a manual process.

Hi,

I am also interested in this. Do you know when the next version GEDI will be released with the subsetting capability prior to downloading the large dataset?

Thanks,

Yang Lei

hi @leiyangfrancis we will talk to our AppEEARS team and let you know a status update once we have an answer. Thanks!

Hi,
The date is TBD, depending on the data availability. We will post when we have more information on the release of the next version of GEDI data. We will also have a better idea of when AppEEARS can be made compatible with the GEDI.
Thanks,
