The following questions were received from a user by the GES DISC Help Desk, and are posted here for community information.

"Does GLDAS TWS considers surface water?
What is Canopy Interception?

Is the groundwater storage representative of shallow or deep ground water?"

The answer was provided by a GLDAS/NLDAS Subject Matter Expert:

"The Catchment land surface model (CLSM) anchoring GLDAS2.2 does not simulate surface water.

dCanopy interception represents rainfall intercepted by the canopy of trees and plants while the part of rainfall not intercepted becomes surface runoff and infiltration.

CLSM simulated groundwater storage represents shallow groundwater storage.

You can find more information about CLSM and GLDAS2.2 in the paper: Li, B., M. Rodell, S. Kumar, et al. 2019. "Global GRACE data assimilation for groundwater and drought monitoring: Advances and challenges." Water Resour. Res., 55: 7564-7586 [DOI:10.1029/2018wr024618].
