S-NPP spacecraft in safe mode

by LAADS_UserServices_M » Wed Jul 27, 2022 11:25 am America/New_York

Updated 2022-08-11:16:30 UTC -- The S-NPP High Rate Data downlink was activated on August 11, 2022, at 14:35 UTC. LandSIPS and LANCE have started receiving SNPP VIIRS science data since around 15:48 UTC yesterday, August 10, but all product distribution will remain suspended till instrument status and product quality have been confirmed by the Cal/Val, QA and the respective science teams.

-----------------

Updated 2022-08-10:16:00 UTC -- SNPP Instrument heater activation activities were completed on Monday, August 8. Instrument power-on activities have started since Tuesday, August 9, and will continue through today, Wednesday, August 10. The earliest the instrument activation process for science data could start is today, Wednesday, August 10. The process will be sequential and is expected to occur in the order of ATMS, VIIRS, OMPS, CERES, and CrIS. After all of the instruments are activated then the HRD transmitter will be powered on.

Please note that SNPP science data from LandSIPS and LANCE will not be made available to the users until all instrument status and science data record have been confirmed by the VIIRS Cal/Val and QA teams. Full return to the nominal status is not expected for at least another week but we will keep all users updated about this progress.

-----------------

Updated 2022-08-05:16:30 UTC -- SNPP entered a non-nominal state at ~16:24:49 UTC on Jul 26, 2022, and since then all SMD and telemetry data have been inaccessible, and all instruments were in safe-mode. The latest status on this indicates that the spacecraft have been back to mission pointing mode and all engineering data have started coming in, but all science data acquisition is still disabled. All instruments are expected to be activated gradually by next week and instrument science status is expected to be confirmed by the week of August 15.

-----------------

Updated 2022-08-01:19:54 UTC -- S-NPP transitioned to Mission Point mode on Friday, July 29, 2022. The S-NPP HRD transmitter was powered off on July 29, 2022 at 16:04 UTC. Engineering continues to troubleshoot.

-----------------

Updated 2022-07-28:19:45 UTC -- As of 1730 UTC (July 28, 2022), efforts are still underway to investigate the S-NPP anomaly and prepare a plan to return the S-NPP spacecraft back to nominal status. These efforts are expected to continue into next week. S-NPP is currently in sun point (sun-safe) mode and all instruments are in a safe state. Although the HRD transmitter remains on, Direct Broadcast (DB) users are advised that science data is not available. All missed data will not be recoverable. No data is available starting at 16:09 UTC, July 26, 2022.

-----------------

The SNPP spacecraft has entered a non-nominal state at ~16:24:49 UTC on Jul 26, 2022, after which all SMD and telemetry data have become inaccessible. LANCE has not received any SNPP SMD data since around 16:25z on July 26.
While the root cause continues to be investigated, subsequent contacts have confirmed the spacecraft and all instruments are currently in a safe mode state. All lost data will not be recoverable. We will post further updates on this as we receive more information.
