Trouble downloading MCD12Q1 data through R script

I'm having problems downloading MCD12Q1 data using the runGdal function from the MODIS package in R. The script attempts to run for a couple of hours and then I consistently receive the following error:

Hm, I have to search for the file. Next time provide the full path and I'll be very fast!
Error in strsplit(x, ":") : non-character argument

I derived my code directly from the eBird Best Practices guide to downloading MODIS data: https://cornelllabofornithology.github.io/ebird-best-practices/covariates.html

Might this error have anything to do with my access to this data, or any known/ongoing issues with LPDAAC data download? I understand this might have to do with R package issues outside of your purview so I apologize if this is the wrong forum for this, I can delete if necessary. Thank you for your help.
