Request for new platform and instrument GCMD keywords

by crdowney » Wed Aug 24, 2022 2:01 pm America/New_York

Hello,
Would it be possible to combine two platforms to make a new keyword and combine four instruments to make another new keyword?
CERES SYN1 products combine data from Terra and Aqua and several instruments on those platforms, and this has caused issues during granule ingest at the ASDC. To fix this issue, we would like to make "Terra+Aqua" a new platform and "FM1+FM2+FM3+FM4" a new instrument, if possible.

The hierarchies:
Platforms > Space-based Platforms > Earth Observation Satellites > Terra+Aqua
This new platform keyword would combine the Earth Observing System, Terra (AM-1) and Earth Observing System, Aqua platforms.
Documentation: https://ceres.larc.nasa.gov/instruments/satellite-missions/#aqua
https://ceres.larc.nasa.gov/instruments/satellite-missions/#terra

Instruments > Earth Remote Sensing Instruments > Passive Remote Sensing > Spectrometers/Radiometers > Radiometers > FM1+FM2+FM3+FM4
The FM means Flight Model. This new keyword would be used as a combination of the CERES-FM1, CERES-FM2, CERES-FM3, and CERES-FM4 instruments.
Documentation: https://ceres.larc.nasa.gov/

Please let me know if we are allowed to add these types of combined identifiers to the GCMD keywords.
Thank you!
Caroline

Combining two Platforms or Instruments is not a practice that we follow or recommend. I am trying to understand your use case a little bit better. If both Terra and Aqua are the Platforms, they should both be keyed in the metadata.

The metadata does list the platforms and the instruments separately. We've been asked by our data provider and our ingest team to have the combined fields added as our prior ingest system allowed for these settings. If it is impractical, we will look to other options.
We were directed to ask first as this, for us, would be the easiest option.

Combining platforms and instruments would cause substantial impacts to other users using the keywords and subsequent search. It is recommended that platform keywords be assigned in a consistent manner and not be combined. You can find additional information/guidance on platform keywords at https://wiki.earthdata.nasa.gov/display/CMR/Platform

Is it possible to describe the combined product in the Title or Abstract?
