VIIRS IR data and atmospheric concentration

Hello - I'm new to analysis of satellite imagery, but I have a question about VIIRS capabilities. I'm interested in using VIIRS to examine the atmospheric concentration of various atmospheric gases, similar to this paper that used ACE-FTS:

VIIRS has some bands covering similar ranges (M9-M16), but I haven't found much/any research using VIIRS for study atmospheric composition, but rather it's been used for nighttime imagery, fires, etc.

Am I missing something or could VIIRS also be used for this application and I just haven't found examples? Thanks!

Dear user @capnbob0618 ,

Doing retrievals of atmospheric composition (gases) requires spectroscopy, which requires measuring at a high spectral resolution. Imagers such as VIIRS observe in wavelength bands of 20-40 nm in width, which are much too wide to pick out narrow absorption lines of different gases.
