VIIRS IR data and atmospheric concentration

Hello - I'm new to analysis of satellite imagery, but I have a question about VIIRS capabilities. I'm interested in using VIIRS to examine the atmospheric concentration of various atmospheric gases, similar to this paper that used ACE-FTS: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0022407311002706.
VIIRS has some bands covering similar ranges (M9-M16), but I haven't found much/any research using VIIRS for study atmospheric composition, but rather it's been used for nighttime imagery, fires, etc.
Am I missing something or could VIIRS also be used for this application and I just haven't found examples? Thanks!
