Seasonal climatologies on opendap/thredds

by btupper » Thu Nov 10, 2022 5:38 pm America/New_York

Hello,

I feel like at one point seasonal climatologies were available in the L3SMI thredds catalog. They had names that included SCSU, SCAU to indicate seasonal climatologies for summer and autumn (for example). For the life of me I can't seem to track them down now. Are they still served via opendap for programmatic access, and, if so, where does one find them?

Thanks, Ben

P.S. The L3 browser also provides mission climatologies, but I can't find those in thredds either.

They are cataloged under the first data day of the climatology.
So, for Aqua look in:

MODISA/L3SMI/2002/0621/
AQUA_MODIS.20020621_20210920.L3m.SCSU.xxx

MODISA/L3SMI/2002/0921/
AQUA_MODIS.20020921_20211220.L3m.SCAU.xxx

MODISA/L3SMI/2002/1221/
AQUA_MODIS.20021221_20220320.L3m.SCWI.xxx

MODISA/L3SMI/2003/0321/
AQUA_MODIS.20030321_20210620.L3m.SCSP.xxx

It's so nice to have these available.

I have noticed a difference in the global metadata for these two.

It seems that "geospatial_xxx_res" and "spatialResolution" are stored in different units. Is this to be expected?

Thanks!
Ben

The geospatial_{lat,lon}_resolution parameters are supposed to have values in the same units as defined in the geospatial_{lat,lon}_units attribute, which is in degrees. These are a "standard" ACDD (Attribute Convention for Data Discovery) convention. The SST product is processed with a version of the code that predates our fixing this inconsistency.
The spatialResolution is a metadata element that I defined because I wanted it :D , no standard or convention defines it.

We will eventually move the SST processing to the same code base, and the metadata will match the OC products.

Regards,
Sean
