Create a PLOT with a NetCDF or HDF datafile with Panoply

What is Panoply
  • Panoply plots geo-referenced and other arrays from netCDF, HDF, GRIB, and other datasets.
  • Panoply is a cross-platform application that runs on Macintosh, Windows, Linux, and other desktop computers. Panoply requires that your computer has a compatible Java 11 (or later version) JRE or JDK installed.
Download Panoply here.

How to view and plot your NetCDF or HDF data
1. Once you have Panoply in your machine, just simply right-click on your file, select "Open with", and select "Panoply".

2. Panoply arranges the file information in different tabs. In this example, we can see the tab with all the variables, an information tab, and the metadata tab.

3. To view the data in a plot, right-click on the desired variable and choose a plot type.
A "Create a Plot" window will open, chose the reference and click "Create".

4. As quickly as that, now we have our data plotted!
As you can see, you can modify your plot to your liking by changing the scale, editing the labels, etc.
For example; if you want to zoom the geographical region where the data is located, click on the "Map" tab, select "Transverse Mercator (Sphere)" within the "Projection" field, and edit the Longitude and Latitude
