Choosing MCD19A2.006 tiles to cover a region

Say I want to figure out which tiles in the scheme used by MCD19A2 collection 6 (identified with names like "h10v04") are necessary to cover some region of interest (such as the contiguous United States). What's the recommended way to do that? An official shapefile for the tiles would be helpful.

Hello @kodiologist,

In order to better re-direct your question to the appropriate Subject Matter Expert, could you please let us know what project are you referring to?
Thank you,

I'm not sure what you're asking. If you're asking what research project I'm involved in, I'm a biostatistician at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, working on a non-NASA study of matching up satellite products like MCD19A2 with independent data sources. If you're asking about MCD19A2, it's an aerosol optical depth product described here: https://lpdaac.usgs.gov/products/mcd19a2v006/ .

This said, my question is really just about the tiling scheme of standard MODIS products and doesn't have much to do with aerosols. Perhaps the LP DAAC would have relevant subject-matter experts?

Hi @kodiologist The HV numbers correlate to the HV Grid. An example can be found here: https://lpdaac.usgs.gov/data/get-started-data/collection-overview/missions/modis-overview/#modis-tiling-systems I am not aware of a shapefile that currently exists of the HV grid but I have passed this idea on to our science team. Thanks!

Hi @kodiologist just following up with additional information. There is a KMZ file of the HV grid, which can be found here: https://modis.ornl.gov/files/modis_sin.kmz

Thank you, I think that file will do nicely. It seems to define the geometry in 3D rather than 2D, which is probably a mistake, but I don't think that will be hard to work around.
